Fullbacks

Terrell Smith is a lead blocking beast and Castille is learning the ropes as a backup. We don't see the Cards aggressively seeking a FB (though Owen Schmitt might be awfully tempting in the late rounds).
Charted comments are mostly drawn from NFL Draft Scouts.com narratives (shown in black) with comments from additional sources shown in different colors. BRS = Red Sporting News War Room = Orange. USA Today = Green. PFW = Blue
Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
1 Owen Schmitt, W.Va. 6-2 249 4.76 27 1.59 2.71     4.18 -- 6.96 --
Pro Day - Ran 4.76 and 4.82 40s, 4.18 short shuttle, 6.96 cone, did a position workout and kept combine times

BRS (Gollin)  -- Saw him. Loved him. One of those unsung Bruschi/Vrabel type guys you find on winning rosters.

The Sportiing News War Room - Throwback fullback who makes his biggest plays as a blocker. Lacks the athleticism many teams covet but is a solid lead blocker who consistently opens holes.

Surefire Scouting - A throwback fullback who has overcome a lot of adversity and will continue to do so. He reached near cult-status among the WV faithful. He possesses ideal strength, size and disposition to be an NFL lead blocker. His versatility as a receiver and short yardage runner are an added bonus.

PFW - Has developed a reputation for busting helmets and has the physical tools to develop into a solid contributer.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
2 Peyton Hillis, Arkansas 6-1 237 4.57 26 1.64 2.69 35 9-8 4.24 -- 7.16 --

Pro day - Ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.58, had a 35-inch vertical jump, 4.24 short shuttle, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else. He looked good but dropped several passes.

BRS (Gollin)  - Ayanbadejo type versatile FB. Wiz may like a strong lead-blocker like Terrell Smith in his backfield on running downs, but when it's time to throw the pigskin, our guess is that he'd rather go -back with 3 wideouts or an H-Back.

The Sportiing News War Room - Often compared to StL fullback Brian Leonard, but Hillis isn't as productive with the ball in his hands.

Surefire Scouting - His ability as a third down back, blocker and occasional runner make him attractive in the middle rounds.

PFW - Soft, versatile back catches the ball well.

3 Jerome Felton, Furman 5-11 242 4.69 30 1.57 2.65 36 9-7 4.33 -- 7.17 --
Pro Day - Ran the 40 in 4.74, had a 36-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 7-inch long jump, 4.33 short shuttle, 7.17 cone drill and ran position drills. He kept his 30 reps in the bench press from the combine. he worked out again for the Eagles on March 21.

BRS (Gollin)  - We're happy with Terrell Smith lead blocking, but maybe as an UDFA after the draft.

The Sportiing News War Room - Small school prospect with the size, strength and athleticism necessary to become a physical lead blocker.

Surefire Scouting - An excellent short yardage and goal line runner. An intelligent athletic player who should have a smooth transition to the NFL. His versatility will allow him to contribute right away.

PFW - Athletic small school runner lacks toughness.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
4 Mike Cox, Georgia Tech 6-0 258 4.95 -- -- --     -- -- -- --
BRS (Gollin)  - Possibility as UDFA

The Sportiing News War Room - Cox is pretty much a one-dimensional old school fullback who with hard work has the talent to become a quality NFL starter.

PFW - Might not look pretty but gets the job done.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
5 Jacob Hester, LSU 5-11 225 4.62 22 1.61 2.68 29 9-2 4.23 -- 6.86 --

Pro Day - Had a 29-inch vertical jump, ran position drills and kept everything else from the combine. Caught the ball well in workouts

BRS (Gollin)  - Another Ayanbadejo Jack of all trades type

The Sportiing News War Room -The type of fullback who often makes it in the NFL as a backup because of his versatility as a blocker, runner and receiver.

Surefire Scouting - His work ethic and desire may not be enough to further his career.

PFW - Could bring great versatility as a FB, one-back or short yardage goal line runner. A classic overachiever who leaves everything on the field.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
7 Doug Jones, Cin. 6-3 281 5.05 -- -- --     -- -- -- --
BRS (Gollin)  - UDFA possibility

The Sportiing News War Room - Jones is nothing more than a training camp invitee unless a team gambles and moves him to center or guard.

PFW - No write up

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
8 Rolly Lumbala, Idaho 6-0 249 4.85 -- -- --     -- -- -- --
BRS (Gollin)  - UDFA possibility

The Sportiing News War Room - Although Lumbala also played RB and TE in college, his best fit in the NFL is as a backup FB,

PFW - Strong, well-built short yardage goal line runner.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
9 Chris Brown, Tennessee 6-2 250 4.90 -- -- --     -- -- -- --
BRS (Gollin)  - Maybe as an UDFA H-Back.

The Sportiing News War Room - Brown is something of a tweener who looks like an H-Back but lacks the speed and big play ability to play that position.

PFW - Athletic H-Back is best on the move.

Rk Name/School Ht Wt 40 BP 10 20 VJ BJ 20S 60S 3C WU
10 Brandon McAnderson, Kansas 5-10 240 4.91 21 -- -- 29 8-11 4.34 -- 7.32 --
Pro Day - Ran the 40 in 4.91 and 4.92, had a 29-inch vertical jump, 8-foot, 11-inch long jump, 4.34 short shuttle, 7.32 cone drills, 21 reps in the bench press, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else

BRS (Gollin)  - With 4.91 speed, he's not likely to be drafted.

The Sportiing News War Room - Played in a one-back set in college and isn't a true FB. His best chance to stick on an NFL roster is as a #3 tailback.

Surefire Scouting - While not a pure fullback, he has enough ability and the mental make-up to, in time, become a solid pro.

PFW - Has enough skills to fit as a one-back.

UR
Johnson, Dionte   Ohio State   6-0 238 4.85

BRS (Gollin) - Cardinal UDFA said to resemble current AZ lead-blocker Terrells Smith. Powerful...straight ahead runner...lights out blocker who will have to battle Smith and (recently bulked up to 245) 2nd year man Castille.

Pro Scouts.com - Positives: Has a short, compact build, but shows solid upper body muscle development with thick chest, neck and arm muscles, thick thighs and tapered calves... Used mostly on special teams and in short-yardage situations, showing adequate ability as a positional-type of blocker...Team captain with very good work ethic in the training room...Stays low in his pads and is quick coming out of his stance, showing good power and leg drive through the holes...Effective route runner who makes crisp moves in and out of his cuts...Makes proper body adjustments getting through the holes in attempts to widen the rushing lane for the tailback...Intelligent athlete who has no problem digesting a complicated playbook...Runs with good balance, doing a nice job of picking his feet over trash...Has the body control to take proper angles in attempts to neutralize second-level defenders...Comes out of his stance at a low pad level and is quick to locate defenders on the move...Generates good shock and jolt with his hands and does a good job of squaring his shoulders and driving with his legs through arm tackles...Lacks lateral agility, but has a good short-area burst on straight-line runs.

Negatives: Strictly a North-South runner with no hip swerve or shake to elude, on the rare chances he gets to carry the ball...Good short-area blocker, but will sometimes over-extend and fall off his hits in the open field...Tight in his hips when trying to change direction...Has a strong hand punch, but gets pushed back through the rush lane when he lets defenders attack his body (hands get outside his frame, at times)...Marginal route runner whose upper body tightness causes him to struggle when having to turn and position for the thrown ball...Needs to anchor better vs. the blitz, as strong middle linebackers can stone him (also needs to play with a search-and-destroy attitude).

Compares To: TERRELLE SMITH-Arizona...Outside of special teams and as a lead blocker in short-yardage situations, Johnson brings little value to the table. He has touched the ball only seven times in 42 games and while he is an efficient position blocker, he is not relentless. He can be walked back through the rush lanes by bigger, stronger middle linebackers and lacks natural hands to be a capably safety valve on third-down passing situations. He might get into camp due to his father, but he really needs to step it up as a blocker in order to hope for a final roster spot.
