Offensive Tackles |

Charted comments are mostly
drawn from NFL Draft Scouts.com narratives (shown in black) with
comments from additional sources shown in different colors. BRS =
Red Sporting
News War Room = Orange. USA Today =
Green, Surefire Scouting -
Purple. PFW = Blue |
|
Cards have virtually no depth at tackle (unless you consider backup G
Elton Brown capable on both the left and right sides). This draft is deep in
quality tackles who can play on the left side. If (a) the right one fell to
the Cards #16 and (b) all other equally or higher ranked players at
need positions were already off the board, we could see the Cards opting to
draft someone like Otah or Chris Williams. Or perhaps they'll hope that a
Baker, Nicks or Cherilus will fall to them in rounds 2 - 4. |

Pro Day
- Ran the 40 in 5.28 and 5.31, had 25 reps in the bench press (he had
29 reps at the combine), ran position drill s and kept everything else
from the combine.
BRS
(Gollin) - We rank him higher than established LT's like Claby and
Long because Otah is known as a power run blocker and Whisenhunt wants
to continue building the Cardinal offense around a power running game.
The
Sporting News War Room -Looks more like a starting RT based on his
height, long arms and thick lower body. But could become a left tackle
with more consistent technique.
Surefire Scouting - May begin his career at RT, but he has the
athleticism and wingspan to eventually make the transition to LT. He
is an unfinished product with tremendous NFL potential.
PFW
- A big tough mauler who has only played five years of organized
football and is loaded with upside. Otah could fit best on the right
side in the pros but has enough athleticism to play on the left side.
|
Physical |
Has a rare-sized frame with very long arms and legs, big bubble,
thick thighs and calves, wide hips and large hands...Raw talent
with the frame to engulf the smaller defenders, especially when
he keeps his hands inside the frame...lacks overall muscle
development and could stand to lose at least 15 pounds, as his
soft midsection causes him to stay too high in his stance |
|
Strength |
Uses his lower-body power and size to move defenders off the
snap. |
|
Athleticism |
No info |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Lacks explosion...Shows adequate foot quickness to get off the
ball, but can be late at times |
|
Feet |
Shows adequate feet in his kick slide...Lacks the foot speed to
play on an island at left tackle, but with his ability to
quickly recoil and reset his hands after initially locking on to
the opponent, he could earn a starting job immediately at right
tackle at the next level...Has the functional foot movement to
slide and reach his set point, but needs to do it more
consistently...lacks the quick feet to recover if he gets beat
off the snap |
|
Drive Blocking |
Best when driving forward to knock defenders off the ball in the
ground game... |
|
Toughness |
Has questionable toughness and plays with inconsistent
aggression...Adequate competitiveness on the field to finish
blocks, playing with good nastiness, as added experience has
allowed him to come off the snap with better aggressiveness than
he showed as a junior |
|
On the Move |
Adequate as a run blocker because of his size, but struggles to
get out in front when pulling. |
|
Pass Blocking |
Because he struggles to handle the speed rush, he has learned to
compensate by dropping his pads and using his size to wall off.
However, he will struggle to readjust to quick counter
moves...Has functional feet for a left tackle, but struggles
when defensive ends cross his face and needs to be more active
with his hands...Lacks the hip snap to readjust to counter moves
and struggles vs. the speed rush, as he lacks the balance to
mirror defenders coming off the edge. |
|
Overall Technique |
Has developed a strong hand punch to shock and jolt the
defender...For a player of his size, he does not put enough
force behind his hand punch at times |
|
Intangibles |
Works hard to improve his blocking technique and takes to hard
coaching...Well-liked, but quiet player who gets along with
teammates...Shows an ability to learn, but will need some reps,
as he is not quick to take plays from the chalkboard to the
playing field -- he lacks high football intelligence because he
hasn't played the game for very long...Needs to be monitored in
the training room because of poor work habits and lacks the
maturity needed to handle the mental aspect of playing on an
island at left tackle |

Pro Day
-
He
ran the 40 in 5.20 and 5.27, with a 31-inch vertical jump, 9-foot long
jump, 4.7 short shuttle and 7.07 cone drill.
BRS
(Gollin) - Just a gut feeling that Long isn't quite as good as
he's cut out to be - therefore, I rate Clady a tiny bit higher.
The
Sporting News War Room - Clady must focus on using good technique
on every play. He should start early in his NFL career and eventually
become a Pro Bowl player.
Surefire Scouting - Clady is versatile enough to play on either
side and is equally adept at run and pass blocking. He has the
quickness and agility to become a Pro Bowl tackle.
PFW
- A 300 lb dancing bear who may not realize how good he can be.
|
Physical |
Has a
big frame with developing muscle tone, long limbs, large hands,
good midsection, wide waist and hips and can add at least
another 20 pounds of bulk without having the added weight impact
his overall quickness...Has that long arm reach to extend, lock
on and wall off his man |
|
Strength |
Lacks
lower-body strength...will get up on his heels and is
susceptible to getting walked back into the pocket |
|
Athleticism |
Has
good change-of-direction agility and flexibility, staying low in
his pads while demonstrating proper knee bend to attain leverage
and sustain...Shows good body control and balance on the move
and anchors well |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Still
developing better drive-blocking skills, but has very good
quickness off the snap...Fires out quickly, making good body
adjustments when pulling upfield |
|
Feet |
Light
on his feet and shows the vision and agility to quickly react to
movement...Might be a better fit at right tackle, as he has
problems handling fast movement when on an island...Shows good
footwork and shuffling ability to wall off and screen in run
protection |
|
Drive Blocking |
Could
be a more effective drive blocker if he can add and maintain at
least 20 pounds on his frame...lack of ideal leg drive prevents
him from getting great movement on drive blocks and he fails to
show enough power to root out more physical defenders. |
|
Toughness |
More
of a position blocker than a physical one |
|
On the Move |
Has
good lateral agility on the short pulls...Shows the lateral
agility and slide to be very effective leading on sweeps...Comes
off the ball hard and has the body control to execute blocks in
space...Smooth in his movements when blocking on traps, showing
good hip snap to adjust and make contact on the move |
|
Pass Blocking |
Gets
caught up in the battle in the trenches, trying to face up and
stone the defender, rather than slide back and protect the
pocket...Has quick feet, but when he loses on a counter move and
the edge rusher gets free, he is slow to recover |
|
Overall Technique |
Works
to finish blocks with a good base ...Will
sometimes aim high when coming out of his stance...Alert to
twists and games, sliding his feet well retreating to protect
the pocket vs. the blitz...Works well in concert with his guards
to neutralize in-line action...rare to see him lunge at a
defender... Extends his arms properly and sinks his hips in
order to consistently lock on and ride his man wide...Has made
good strides in handling double moves, but must anchor better
vs. the inside surge |
|
Intangibles |
Intelligent player with good vision, but he has had a few mental
lapses on the field that have produced costly penalties....Must
show better work habits in the weight room and needs to be
monitored |

Pro Day - Kept his
numbers from the combine and only ran position drills, but had a great
workout.
BRS
(Gollin) - I realize this might be an oversimplification, but if
he was that good, why didn't Henne put up Heisman-type numbers and
Michigan lead the country in rushing offense? Certainly a high first
round talent, but I'm not sure if he's the second coming of Boselli or
Ogden.
The
Sporting News War Room - He lacks the athleticisim to be a
premier left tackle but could become a solid left tackle or an elite
right tackle.
Surefire
Scouting - May not be an immediate fixture at LT but he could
contribute on the right side early in his career. His lack of ideal
foot speed in pass protection will be exposed early in his career but
ultimately he has the potential to become a Pro Bowl LT.
PFW -
Could be a pro bowl right tackle whom a team could run behind all day,
but could always struggle against some elite pass rushers.
|
Physical |
Has a thick frame with good upper-body muscle tone, long arms,
wide hips, thick thighs and calves...Also has room on his frame
to add at least another 20 pounds of bulk without having the
added weight impact his overall quickness |
|
Strength |
No Info |
|
Athleticism |
Shows good quickness and body control for a player of his
size...Can locate and land in short space but isn't as effective
on the long pull...an struggle when having to immediately change
direction |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Does
lack ideal explosion...Needs to show better explosion off the
snap |
|
Feet |
Does a good job of staying on his feet working in-line, where he
can wall off and position with ease |
|
Drive Blocking |
Drive blocks with excellent leverage and is consistent at moving
the pile...An
aggressive blocker...Can be a drive blocker who shows good
explosion in his initial step off the snap...Gets good movement
in his drive blocks |
|
Toughness |
Plays with a mean streak, looking to constantly finish his man
off. |
|
On the Move |
Shows
the footwork to get in front on traps and pulls...Lacks timed
speed, but is efficient at locating linebackers when asked to
work into the second level |
|
Pass Blocking |
Uses his long reach and size to neutralize edge rushers...Has no
problems handling movement and is quick to react to stunts and
blitzes...Keeps his balance working into the second level and
has a wide leg base in his pass set...prefers to use his size to
engulf or hands to sustain rather than blow up the
defender...More effective working on an island with an edge
rusher, as his lack of ideal hip swerve will see him allow
inside penetration...Very quick to set and recoil with his
hands, showing good knee bend setting up in pass protection |
|
Overall Technique |
Sound technically...effective at handling the switch-off...Uses
his hands like weapons in attempts to pick up stunts and can
also catch the defender with his big mitts...His hand punch will
consistently shock and jolt the defender...Sees threats quickly
and stays square in his base to absorb the edge rusher. |
|
Intangibles |
Take-charge type and field leader who plays with good field
awareness ...has the knowledge to call blocking adjustments up
front...Never takes a play off and drives through the defender
with good intent and force...Easily digests a complicated
playbook and makes good field adjustments to twists and
games...Rarely makes a mental error and is very alert on the
field...Vocal team captain who will not hesitate to take a
teammate to task...Has a true passion for the game, playing with
a warrior-like mentality...Hard worker who will do anything the
coaches ask and is a model for good work ethic, especially in
the weight room... |

Pro Day
-
Ran the 40 in 5.00 and 5.06, had a 4.71 short shuttle, 7.83 cone
drill, ran position drills and kept his combine numbers for everything
else. He reportedly looked very good in position drills..
Senior Bowl (TSN War Room) -
(Wed)
Gosder locked up on defensive ends and eliminated them from plays when
he got a hold of them. He needs to become more aggressive with his
hands in pass protection so he can handle quick underneath moves. He
looks to be a solid right tackle prospect, but he'll have difficulty
at left tackle.
(Earlier)
When Cherilus lined up at right tackle he was solid, but not dominant.
At left tackle, though, he did not use hands well and lacked the foot
quickness to protect the corner.
BRS
(Gollin) - Of all the guys I saw in post season activity, Cherilus
impressed me the most. Funny thing - my mental picture of him had
Cherlius much stockier than his actual 6-8+ inch height. While
not quite the prospects Clady and Long are reputed to be, he looks
like a better run blocker and represents a better need-fit for
the Cardinals.
The
Sporting News War Room - Can dominate when using good
technique and aggressiveness. He doesn't project as an elite tackle
but should be a good starter on the left or right side.
Surefire Scouting - Projects to RT. After a disappointing senior
season, in which he played out of position at LT, he has the tools and
mentality to work his way into a starting lineup.
PFW
- Has all the physical ability to play left tackle if he could figure
it out but will likely be moved back to the right side as a rookie.
|
Physical |
Has a tall, lanky frame with excellent arm length, large, strong
hands, a huge wingspan and room on his frame to carry at least
another 25 pounds of bulk without having it impact his
quickness...Has good muscle mass throughout, showing broad
shoulders and a thick chest, along with good thickness in his
thighs and calves... |
|
Strength |
Good upper body strength...Has the lower-body power and long
arms to widen the rush lane and when he keeps his pads down, he
is much more effective getting movement at the point of
attack... |
|
Athleticism |
Mauler-type who works best with other blockers around him to
compensate for poor change-of-direction agility...questionable
change-of-direction agility |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Only
adequate initial quickness. |
|
Feet |
Displays marginal footwork in pass protection, stepping behind
himself ...Has a good anchor in pass protection but lacks the
agility to get out and handle edge moves. |
|
Drive Blocking |
At his best when asked to collapse the interior defensive line
and widen the rush lanes...Has the straight-forward burst to get
into the second level, doing an adequate job to bend at the
knees and torque...Breaks down well as a run blocker, especially
on down blocks, using his leg drive to push the defender out of
the holes. |
|
Toughness |
No Info |
|
On the Move |
Has good pulling speed in the short area and plays with true
aggression |
|
Pass Blocking |
Needs help in pass protection, as he gets his feet too wide at
times ...Susceptible to explosive edge rushers, despite his
timed speed...Works hard to finish and has a strong anchor,
showing patience to let defenders come to him....Possesses rare
arm length and will generally win one-on-one battles once he
locks on to his opponent with his big mitts, as he uses his
hands with authority in tight quarters but will lunge or get his
hands outside his frame when having to isolate vs. edge rushers. |
|
Overall Technique |
Just
adequate shooting his hands with force...Once he gets into
position and gets his hands on the defender, he does a good job
of sustaining his block and eliminating his opponent from the
play, but needs to shoot those hands with better
consistency...Has the raw power to jolt the defender with his
hand punch, but is too inconsistent using it |
|
Intangibles |
Communicates well with his guards and tight ends and shows good
alertness on the field...Intelligent athlete who will not have
problems taking plays from the chalkboard to the playing
field...Regarded by the coaching staff as the team's most
important player and takes pride in his leadership role, taking
younger blockers under his wing...Tough player who works hard to
finish and responds well to hard coaching, especially when
challenged, and is motivated to work on the little techniques in
his game...Needs to concentrate better on the field, as he is
prone to mental lapses that lead to a slew of costly penalties. |

Pro Day
-
Did position drills and kept his numbers from the workout. The Cowboys
sent a two-person video crew to tape his workout.
Senior Bowl (TSN
War Room) (Wed.)
Williams continued his dominant play as he moved from right tackle to
left tackle. He got his hands on defensive ends and used his long arms
and strength to keep his man away from the play. Williams also showed
fire by getting into a skirmish after one play, but he seemed to lose
focus on the next few snaps after the incident
(Earlier) -
A massive tackle with long arms and legs and wide frame, Williams
showed a rare competitive fire among really big linemen. He got his
hands on pass rushers quickly and once he engaged, he showed the
strength to eliminate his man. We were so impressed with Williams at
right tackle that we hope the South coaching staff gives him reps at
left tackle because we think he has what it takes to play there in the
NFL.
BRS
(Gollin) - More finessy than a power guy. Cards need less finesse
and more physical play from the OT position.
The
Sporting News War Room - A smart player with sound technique.
Really impressed NFL coaches and GM's at the Senior Bowl.
Surefire Scouting -Surrendered only two sacks over the last two
years and has solidified his draft status with an exceptional senior
campaign. Proved to be the best OT prospect at the Senior Bowl.
PFW
- A much better pass protector than run blocker. Has the ability to
start at LT for ten years. However he can be frustrating to watch in
the run game.
|
Physical |
Has a thick, wide upper body with broad shoulders, big bubble,
wide hips and solid thigh and calf thickness...Has the wingspan
and big hands to make the reach block...Not soft, but lacks
ideal overall muscle tone (has a thick frame that shows marginal
definition) and will need to add more bulk to his frame |
|
Strength |
No Info |
|
Athleticism |
Plays with adequate knee bend and is functional on short pulls
and traps in-line when he plays on his feet but is not good
running long distances. |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Might
be a better fit at guard, thanks to his short area burst |
|
Feet |
Will sometimes struggle with quick defenders, but will use his
size to take up space and anchor...Can pull, but is sometimes
slow moving his feet |
|
Drive Blocking |
Has
greatly improved his drive ability in 2007...Must become more
physical on drive blocks, but he is alert to coverage when
trying to gain position. Has better reach, scope and down
blocking ability when working in-line |
|
Toughness |
More of a finesse-type blocker...needs to become more
aggressive, as he sometimes takes passive swipes rather than
forcefully engaging and driving into the opponent |
|
On the Move |
Good on the short pulls when running a straight line, working
hard to keep his feet on initial contact...Keeps his hands up
high and inside his framework, defeating his man with finesse
counter moves rather than using strength...Lacks the agility to
get in front blocking at the second level |
|
Pass Blocking |
Quicker setting up in pass protection than vs. the
run...Effective at getting to his reach point in pass
protection...Has good slide agility and does a solid job of
working down the line |
|
Overall Technique |
Is
learning to use his hands while running his feet in attempts to
sustain...Not a violent puncher, but knows how to use his reach
to control |
|
Intangibles |
Alerts to stunts and twists, doing a nice job of working in
unison with his guards...Well-liked by teammates and staff and
keeps the players loose with his outgoing personality in the
locker room...Shows very good leadership ability and will put in
the extra hours mentoring a younger teammate...Does all the
little extras in the film room and at practice...Hard worker who
will not need to be monitored...will miss a few assignments now
and then when his concentration lapses |

Senior Bowl (TSN War Room) Nicks blocked with a good base and
leverage, and he showed fine balance, staying over his feet and under
control even when adjusting and moving from side to side.
BRS
(Gollin) - This is where the OT talent drops off. Still, he does
have an intriguing upside.
The
Sporting News War Room - It's difficult to predict Nicks' future.
Has the athleticism to play tackle in the NFL but looks more like a
guard to us.
Surefire Scouting - A one year starter who is just beginning to
realize his potential. He is fundamentally raw, but displays great
athleticism and future potential. He may be overdrafted based on his
upside and will likely take a few years until he is ready to compete.
PFW
- Is big and massive. Similar to Stacy Andrews although not as
explosive - a similar roll of the dice.
|
Physical |
Has a wide, thick frame with a wide waist and hips, long arms,
large hands, very thick thighs and legs |
|
Strength |
|
Athleticism |
Does not change direction well or recover quickly when on the
move ...Has better lateral range and suddenness out of his
stance when he plays at a lighter weight (best at 325
pounds)...Has decent flexibility and adjustment skills on the
move, but does struggle at times to cut off at the second level |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
|
Feet |
Has surprisingly good foot quickness for a player his size...Can
slide his feet adequately in the short area (will struggle to
adjust in the second level)...Still raw in his foot movements
|
|
Drive Blocking |
Generates a powerful explosion behind his hand punch and
displays good tenacity as a drive blocker, using his long arms
and hand jolt to handle double moves and anchor firmly vs. the
inside surge...Determined drive blocker with the natural
strength to consistently drive through and knock down defenders,
as he aggressively attacks his man until the whistle |
|
Toughness |
Mentally tough, but not overly aggressive...loves to face up and
maul rather than sit back and wait for the action..
|
|
On the Move |
Lacks a good running stride when getting to the second level and
must be quicker adjusting with his blocks in space |
|
Pass Blocking |
Will
struggle vs. quick counter moves, but it is rare to see a bull
rusher walk him back into the pocket...Has problems mirroring
the speedier edge rushers and vs. double moves and might be a
better fit for the right side, where he won't be exposed on an
island |
|
Overall Technique |
When he extends and uses his hands to lock up and sustain, the
battle is quickly over...When he aims high coming out of his
stance, it lets the edge rushers utilize a quick spin move to
slip by |
|
Intangibles |
Despite academic struggles, he shows good field awareness (only
penalized once the last two years)...Weight fluctuates
considerably (was 280 three years ago and 343 at the Senior Bowl
after playing the season at 327). |

9-inch long jump, 4.57 short shuttle, 7.63 cone drill, ran positional
workouts and kept bench results from the combine
Senior Bowl - (Wed)
Quick
to get his hands on defensive linemen and pinning them at the line of
scrimmage. He has quick feet and maintains his base and leverage in
pass protection, which helps him slide and shuffle to maintain blocks.
(Earlier)
Despite coming from a lower level of competition at Division 1-AA
Northern Iowa, Rinehart definitely showed he belongs in Mobile. An
offensive tackle for the Panthers, Rinehart took reps at both guard
and tackle on Monday, showing very good all-around athleticism and
flexibility. He played with good knee bend and leverage, and because
he played with a good base, he was able to slide and adjust easily.
Rinehart also did a good job of locking up on the defensive lineman
with good hand placement and consistently eliminated his man.
BRS
(Gollin) - He's got the physical talent, but he's still raw and is
unlikely to contribute right away. That said - he did pass a major
test when he came through with flying colors during Senior Bowl week.
The
Sporting News War Room - Got by on athleticism in college and did
not develop consistent technique. Sure to be drafted more on potential
than on production.
Surefire Scouting - Had a solid showing in the Senior Bowl. Lacks
ideal quickness and may not have faced elite competition, but his
skills as a powerful blocker were clearly evident on film. He will
develop into a fine player and future starter in the NFL.
PFW
- A big strong veteran LT projects to ORT.
|
Physical |
Has a tall frame with good overall body thickness, especially in

Classic mauler who has the hand pop to shock and surprise a
defender.. very focused drive blocker who simply knocks over
defenders with true aggression...Generates movement, firing low
to take the defender off his feet. |

On the Move |
Has very good balance on the move and takes good angles in
pursuit of second-level defenders, evident by his high amount of
downfield blocks every year...he is very effective at getting
out in front on pulls and traps |
|
Pass Blocking |
Does a nice job of getting position to wall off the blitzers and
displays very good balance and anchor taking on the bull rush |
|
Overall Technique |
Might
be a better fit to play inside at guard, as he is a bit of a
waist-bender and struggles at times to move laterally,..Has a
very powerful hand punch, but must do a better job extending to
make reach blocks and keeping placement longer in attempts to
sustain...Must improve his knee bend, but backpedals quickly in
pass protection, taking full advantage of his big chest,
powerful arms, wide hips and thick thighs |
|
Intangibles |
All-out battler with a solid work ethic, showing a good mental
grasp of the game, quickly taking plays from the chalkboard to
the playing field...Hard worker in the weight room and does a
nice job of using that power to deliver a jarring hand
punch...has a "take no prisoners" approach taking on defenders,
as he plays until the whistle and will not hesitate to punish
him man...Respected team leader who will not hesitate to get
vocal when a teammate fails to perform to standards |

Pro Day
-
Ran the 40 in 5.28, had a 30-inch vertical jump, 5.00 short shuttle,
8.19 cone drill, 20 reps at the bench press and ran position drills.
BRS
(Gollin) - Plenty of surface talent, but does he want it
enough? I'd pass on him (unless maybe if he were to fall to us after
the fifth round).
The
Sporting News War Room - Has the talent to become a good
starter at left or right tackle but should spend a season as a backup.
Surefire Scouting - Does not play up to his ability. Has the size
and quickness to be great but has vastly underachieved up to this
point. If the light ever goes on, he could turn out to be a second day
steal - a true boom or bust prospect.
PFW
- Rare measurables scream first round. Inconsistent performance will
temper expectations.

Physical |
Massive man with the long arms to match his height and
weight...Dunlap's rare size, quick feet and long arms make him a
unique tackle prospect who flashes pass blocking potential |
|
Strength |

|
Athleticism |
Good
balance and can re-direct his charge when needed |
|
Quickness/Explosion |
Good
quickness off the snap and eases into his stance fluidly |
|
Feet |
Plays
on the balls of his feet with his knees bent. |
|
Drive Blocking |
Needs
to develop more physicality and aggression as a run blocker if
he is to maximize his impressive potential...Struggles
with consistency as a run blocker. ... More of a wall-off
blocker at this point rather than the physical dominator his
size would indicate. ... Fails to consistently generate movement
at the point of attackEffective wall-off blocker in the running
game. |

|
On the Move |
Too
slow to get out in front of sweeps and is too often simply
eluded by secondary defenders coming up to support the run. |
|
Pass Blocking |
Flashes the ability to remain square to the defender |
|
Overall Technique |
Plays
too high and doesn't keep his feet moving to get the defender
backpedaling. ... Uses his hands and long arms well to control
the defender and locks out effectively |
|
Intangibles |
After
flashing exciting potential early in his career, Dunlap
struggled with consistency as a senior, though scouts are quick
to note he has the size and athleticism to warrant
development...Rare talent, but is viewed as an underachiever to
this point. ... Even when at his best, Dunlap . ...Lateral
agility and balance seen in pass blocking doesn't translate well
to his run blocking, where Dunlap is |
