2015 Draft
Cornerbacks
This page will be a work in progress and updated frequently. Come back often and watch it develop.

1 Trae Waynes CB x Michign State 4.31 6000 186 1st

Lindy's calls him "one of the best defensive backs and cover corners in the country." Combine forty time adds to the enthusiasm...Excellent size and length...experience out on the island...a bit slenderly build (a durabiliity issue)?

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...Michigan State's top-rated prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft substantiated how high people have him rated. Cornerback Trae Waynes (6-foot 1/8, 186 pounds) had a very good workout. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.19 seconds, and stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine (he posted the top 40-yard dash time -- 4.31 seconds -- among cornerbacks in Indianapolis)."

Combine - Arm: 31; 9; BP: 19; VJ: 38.0; BJ: 10-2; 3C: 7.06; 20S: 4.39; 60S: NA.....

2 Marcus Peters CB x Washington 4.53 6000 197 xx

Character concerns muddy up what would otherwise be a superlative rating. (Scouts must check out whether the problem was mostly due to flaws in Marcus' make-up or whether it was more due to friction between Marcus and the Washington coaching staff)...aggressive both in coverage and in run support.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...stood on his combine results. He looked good in drills. He has very good hips and looked good coming out of his breaks. Peters was dismissed from the Washington program in November after disagreements with the coaching staff."

Combine - Arm: 31.5; BP: 17; VJ: 37.5; BJ: 10-1; 3C: 7.08; 20S: 4.08; 60S: 11.26....

4 Quinten Rollins CB x Miami (OH) 4.57 5110 195 1st-2nd

Could be this year's version of DRS (i.e. athletically elite but technique-wise "raw.") Only one year of football since high school and comes from a smallish college program...Constructed well with better than average ball skills.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "... stood on his results from the NFL Scouting Combine. He did have a good workout at the pro day, though. He did a good job moving around, showing good quickness and ball skills. Rollins is the No. 7 corner in the draft, according to NFL Media's Lance Zierlein."

Combine - Arm: 30.3; 9; BP: 14; VJ: 36.5; BJ: 10-2; 3C: 7.10; 20S: 4.28; 60S: 11.53.....

8 PJ Williams CB x Florida State 4.57 6000 194 x

Could be underdrafted due to the juxtaposition with his more heralded teammate Darby...Combine forty was roughly 1/10 of a second slower than his pre-combine est. Impressive combo of speed, fluidity and physicality...but can sometimes be overaggressive and give up big plays.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...ran the 40 in 4.45 seconds on both attempts. He had a 41-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-3 broad jump. Williams has good hands, and looked very smooth and fluid in the position drills. Williams was said to have the flu, but worked out despite it."

Combine - Arm: 31.0; 9; BP: 12; VJ: 40.0; BJ: 11-0; 3C: 7.08; 20S: 4.28; 60S: NA.....

9 Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB x Oregon est. 4.46 5090 192 2nd

Short dude..Rang describes as a "turnover machine:- Instinctive, physical and athletic. "Competive and alert." You get the feeling he'd in the top 3 if he was a few inches longer.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...NA

Combine - No drill results listed.....

6 Ronald Darby CB x Florida State 4.38 5110 193 x

"Not just a track guy in shoulder pads."...4.38 at the combine cut nearly a 10th of a second off his forty number...VJ and BJ numbers are also elite...Nevertheless condsidered to be a tad short and a better athlete than football player... Has the much coveted low, quick backpedal" and "fluid hips." May be more a project than plug & play.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "..had a 10-foot-7 broad jump, did 15 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, and stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine, where he was a top performer in his position group in the 40-yard dash (a fast 4.38-second time) and vertical jump. Darby had what was described as a good cornerback workout at FSU's pro day, adjusting to the ball well in the drills. Darby has visits set up with five NFL teams."

Combine - Arm: 31.4; BP: 12; VJ: 41.5; BJ: 10-9; 3C: 6.94; 20S: 4.14; 60S: NA.....

10 Alex Carter CB x Stanford 4.51 6000 196 x

Tough and physical...Nice size for the pros but tends to be overly-aggressive at times and draws more flags than he should...

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds on both attempts and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine, where he was a top performer in his position group in the vertical jump. Carter worked out very well at the pro day. He is a very smooth individual and looks faster than his 4.5 40 time would suggest. Carter is the son of Tom Carter, who played nine seasons at cornerback in the NFL."

Combine - Arm: 32.2; ; BP: 17; VJ: 40.0; BJ: 10-1; 3C: 7.05; 20S: 4.07; 60S: 11.31....

3 Kevin Johnson CB x Wake Forest 4.52 6000 188 2nd-3rd

"Under the radar." Tested out 13 lbs heavier than pre-combine projections...Rang says scouts are excited about his length, fluidity, agility and natural coverage/ball skills...Can be overaggressive at times. Run support a potential concern due to his lack of bulk.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. Johnson was a top performer among defensive backs in the vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and 20-yard short shuttle. Johnson did not bench press at the combine and also did not do the bench at Wake Forest's pro day, either. Johnson did go through positional drills and looked very good doing so."

Combine - Arm: 31.0; BP: NA; VJ: 41.5; BJ: 10-10; 3C: 6.79; 20S: 3.89; 60S: 12.19.......

11 D'Joun Smith CB x Florida Atlantic 4.45 5100 187 x

Character concerns...good speed and execution of techniques...decent in man coverage but can have trouble turning his head and locating the ball.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...

Combine - Arm: 32.2; BP: NA; VJ: 36.0; BJ: 10-4; 3C: 6.77; 20S: 4.26; 60S: 11.80......

5 Jalen Collins CB x LSU 4.48 6100 203 x

Very good size and speed (excels in man coverage) but his inexperience shows - needs considerable work on his backpedal...

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...NA

Combine - Arm: 30.4; BP: 18; VJ: 36.0; BJ: 10-4; 3C: 6.96; 20S: 4.27; 60S: 11.32.

12 Eric Rowe CB x Utah 4.45 6100 205 x

Heady, physical defender with good length and a legitt NFL frame...Height/speed combo make him an interesting prospect...Combine forty time an improvement over earlier estimates...but still may project better as a safety..

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...stood on his numbers from the combine, which were outstanding (he was among the top performers in his position group in every drill). Rowe had a very good pro day workout, justifying Kelly being there (given the Eagles' glaring need at the position). The 2014 season was Rowe's first at cornerback after having played safety prior. He had a slow start to the season due to an injury. However, he's come alive during the draft season, having a very good combine and pro day."

Combine - Arm: 31.5; BP: 19; VJ: 39.0; BJ: 10-5; 3C: 6.70; 20S: 3.97; 60S: 11.48...

13 Nick Marshall CB x Auburn 4.48 6020 205 x

High risk project - Off the field red flags. Prototypical speed/size ratio...Moved from QB to CB late last year...Combine Forty:4.51...Intriguing. Fits modern-day trend of tall, long-armed corners to match up with tall, physical receivers...Closes quickly...good ball skills....injury cocern...

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...had a busy day, working out on both offense and defense. In his customary role for the Tigers, he threw passes to teammates and had some nice throws. In his projected NFL role, Marshall didn't look out of place at all and very athletic going through defensive back drills. Marshall stood on his numbers from the combine, where he was a top performer among the quarterbacks in every workout.".

Combine - Not Listed

14 Imoan Clairborne CB x Northwestern (LA) St. x 5100 189 x

Smallish press-cover dude who'llhave to answer questions about his small college background and program...

Pro Day (Brandt) - "..ran the 40-yard dash in 4.59 and 4.56 seconds. He had a 39-inch vertical jump and 10-foot broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.58 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.28 seconds. He also performed 13 strength lifts. His performance in the positional workout was described as very smooth and fluid, and he caught the ball well. Claiborne is a potential free-agent pickup for a team following the 2015 NFL Draft.".

Combine - Not Listed.

15 Cam Thomas CB x Western Kentucky 4.53 6000 195 x

Nice size...some technique issues...tough-minded and confident...not afraid to take chances..

Pro Day (Brandt) - NA

Combine - Not Listed.

7 Byron Jones CB x UConn 4.40 6010 199 x

Late riser on basis of sick Pro Day.

Pro Day (Brandt) - "...ran the 40 in 4.45 and 4.4 seconds. He had 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and then stood on the rest of his combine numbers -- Jones set a world standing long jump record while in Indianapolis. Jones worked out well at the pro day, catching the ball really well. He is really good in press coverage. Above all, Jones is described as an outstanding person; he had served as a team captain and was a leader on the field and in the locker room...Nobody blew the lid off the NFL Scouting Combine in February quite like UConn's Byron Jones, who broad-jumped farther than combine participants and Olympians alike with a record-setting mark of 12 feet, three inches.

But the cornerback prospect might have done even more for his draft stock Tuesday by running a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at UConn's pro day, according to NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt. At the combine, where Jones skipped the 40-yard dash because of his recovery from a shoulder surgery, a 4.4 would have ranked third among cornerbacks behind Michigan State's Trae Waynes (4.31) and Florida State's Ronald Darby (4.38).

Given that the cornerback position is considered a thin one in the 2015 draft class, Jones' workout performances could help him move up further on the draft boards of NFL clubs than he could at a deeper position, such as wide receiver or running back. At the combine, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Jones is more than an explosive athlete who can test well in physical drills, crediting Jones for his prolific football skills as well.

Combine: VJ: 44.5; BJ: 12-3; 3C: 6.78; 20S: 3.94; 60S: 10.98
