COLOR KEY -- PROJECTED BY RED SHEET:
Starter / Back Up/ Injured/Unable to Practice/ Practice Squad/Bubble
Quarterbacks:
Post Draft  Kurt Warner has retired. That leaves Leinart who - despite a world of talent - has not yet proved he can carry the team in Warner's absence and the recently signed Whitehurst (who lit it up in Cleveland before laying an egg there and then being cut).. St. Pierre remains in limbo - probably will not be re-signed. Cards traded away McFadden in order to land  Skelton, an athletic but raw small college QB and are said to have added an UDFA QB from BYU.
07 Matt Leinart 6-4 224 USC (D1) Contract Expires 2011
03 Derek Anderson 6-6 230 Oregon State (FA Cleveland)
19 John Skelton 6-5½ 243 Fordham (D5)  Signed
06  Max Hall  QB 6-1 201 24 R  BYU (UDFA)
Running Backs:
Post Draft Beanie is emerging as our feature back, but Hightower is more than Beanie's backup. (It's nice to have two capable RB's on the roster. Wright and Stephens play important roles. Kreider is an OK but not stellar lead blocker. Cards added Ali in early May.
34 Tim Hightower RB 6-0 217 Richmond (D5) Contract Expires 2010
26 Beanie Wells 6-1 235 Ohio State (D1)
Contract Expires 2013
31 Jason Wright RB 5-10 215 Northwestern (FA - Browns)
Contract Expires 2010
36 LaRod Stephens-Howling RB PItt (D7a)
Contract Expires 2011
46 Alfonso Smith RB 6-1 208 23 R Kentucky
45 Reagan Maui'ia FB 6-0 260 Hawaii
42 Charles Ali FB 6-2 255 Arkansas Pine Bluff (FA5 Browns, Ravens)

32  Broughton, Nehemiah  FB 5-11 255 28 3  The Citadel
Wide Receivers:
Post Draft With the emergence of Doucet, we still have Fitz, Breaston and Doucet as our Top 3. (Plus good depth on the PS with Jones and Gant). However, Urban and Morey are UDFA's. Cards added a compact slot/route-runner with 4.46 speed in Roberts.
11 Larry Fitzgerald, Pitt, 6-3 223 (D1) Contract Expires 2012
15 Steve Breaston WR/PKR (D5) 6-0 193 Michigan
RFA
80 Early Doucet WR (D3) 6-0 211 LSU

12 Andre Roberts WR Citadel (D3) 5-10¾ 195 Signed

14 Stephen Williams  WR 6-5 199 23 R Toledo
10 Deryn Bowser WR 6-1 212 UDFA Akron
16  Gant, Edward  WR 6-3 190 25 0  North Alabama
17  Jones, Onrea  WR 6-0 202 26 1  Hampton

87 JuamorrisStewart WR 6-3 205 23 R Southern
18 Max Komar WR 5-11 202 22 R Idaho
Tight Ends:
Post Draft  Lacks a dominant go-to receiver. Patrick has that potential but was suspended for the first 4 games and has yet to make his mark. Becht and Spach can catch a little but are mainly here to block. We'll see what Dray can bring to the table, but he looks like his main strength is as a blocker too.
84 Anthony Becht, 6-5 280 W Va (FA Rams)
83 Stephen Spach, 6-4 250  Fresno St
89 Ben Patrick 6-3 252 (D7) Delaware
86 Dominique Byrd TE USC
81 Jim Dray 6-4¾ 251 (D7) Stanford Signed
Offensive Linemen:
Post DraftThis unit - although it hung together and somehow got the job done most of the time - was exposed at key points during the season. Both Gandy and, to a lesser extent, Levi Brown, were abused by speed rushers coming off the end and our interior guys would occasionally be beat by blitzers or stunters inside. Warner was able to make quick decisions and pull the trigger fast enough to make up for most of the O-line's difficulties in pass pro. Whether Leinart (who's more nimble but less decisive) can do likewise remains questionable. This unit needed more talent at LT and possibly RT. It could also use more quality help at center. (Note: Cards just re-signed Bridges and are reported to have inked FA Hadnot. Both are versatile and open up position-decision options for Russ Grimm. Then - two days after the draft, they added ex-Pro Bowler Alan Faneca who should bring veteran leadership to a relatively young line undergoing many offseason changes).
75 Levi Brown T 6-5 323 Penn St (D1) Contract Expires 2012
66 Alan Faneca 6-5 307 LSU (FA - Jets)

68  Pestock, Tom  G/T 6-6 317 25  NW Missouri State
66  Palmer, Jonathan  G 6-4 336 Auburn

Defensive Linemen:
Post Draft Talented but a bit thin. Dockett is a Pro Bowl lock. Campbell (when playing with both thumbs) is a budding star at WDE. Branch and Watson are stout at DE/DAT. The backups are fairly solid. But it sure would be helpful if this unit had one more hell-raiser on it. Enter top draft pick, Williams (a big space-eater who can also motor up and down the LOS). He was #11 on the Cardinal board. Williams, Watson and Bryan Robinson (who re-upped after the draft) will rotate at NT.

90 Darnell Dockett DT-DE 6-3 292 Florida St. (D3) Contract Expires 2011
98 Gabe Watson 6-3 341 Michigan (D4)
93 Calais Campbell DE 6-8 283 Miami (D2)

97 Bryan Robinson DT 6-4 304 Fresno St
78 Alan Branch DT 6-6 331 (D2)

79 Ken Iwebema 6-4 269 Iowa (D4)

71 Clark, Jeremy  DE 6-3 309 26 1  Alabama
64 Dean Muhtadi DL 6-3 296 Maryland (Packers)
73 Keilen Dykes DT 6-3 305 25 2 West Virginia
65 Ryan Kees  DE 6-6 275 24 1 St. Cloud St.

Linebackers:
Post Draft    Dansby - a Pro Bowl player - signed with Miami. Will Davis was able to get as much out of these guys as you ever could expect. And (at least in some games) they were able to create havoc among opposing pass protectors. Hayes (when he's willing or able) is effective against the run - though vulnerable in coverage. Outside, the Cards had to rely on Okeafor and Berry to put outside pressure on the passer, and they both had their moments. But B-Train is gone and (unless he accepts a pay cut) so too probably is Chike. The Cards planned to groom draft picks Will Davis and Cody Brown for outside duty. Davis showed flashes of talent. Brown wound up on IR and has an empty slate to show for it. Beisel and Haggans provide solid experience. Walker has occasionally flashed play-making experience. That said - this unit lacks one or two "super-heros" who can run like a deer, jump thru the roof, hit like a ton and make big plays that flip football games. Cards added Baggs as a FA in Feb. he tied for the CFL league lead in sacks last year with 12. They also added Lenon (who was credited with well over 100 tackles in 2007 and 2008 with Detroit, before tailing off to 42 as a Ram. The cherry on the ice-cream Sunday came March 19 with the agreement to terms of former Miami and Pittsburgh sack-specialist Joey Porter (29½ sacks in past 2 years). With their 2nd round pick in the draft they added small, but speedy/athletic ILB Washington (who;'s expected to compete right away for the Dansby slot) and Schofield - said to be a late-1st round talent who badly blew out a knee during Senior Bowl Week. He actually may be ready to go later in the summer, but was drafted in the 4th round because he was too good a long-term investment to pass up and worth the risk.

Defensive Backs:
Post Draft  Rolle is gone. Rhodes is here. Net trade-off: We figure to gain sounder play at the 3rd level from Rhodes but lose some of the freakish big play athleticism that Rolle could bring. The versatile Ware is back, and Johnson is one year more experienced. DRC (if he continues to learn the nuances and takes fewer high-risk chances) is well on the way to becoming our first shutdown corner since Aeneas Williams. The addition of McFadden and departure of Hood was supposed to represent a "net plus" and upgrade our starting secondary. It didn't. McFadden is gone now (traded for the 5th round draft pick that brought us Skelton). Cards drafted Jorrick Calvin in the 6th round - he's considered a compact (5-11 185) physical (79 tackles in 2009) corner. An academic technicality benched him for all of last year, but one of his coaches spent a season with the Cardinal staff on an career-advancement program and apparently vouched for the kid. Many Cardinal fans took note of AJ Jefferson's outrageously athletic Combine workout scores and some had targeted him for as high as the 4th round. He's rumored to be joining us as an UDFA and, along with Calvin, would provide us with athletic (if youthful) depth at corner.

At safety, Abdullah was forced into action late in the season, and was victimized during the playoff loss to NO. Adams had his moments; unfortunately, many of them were bad - & due to his height disadvantage. Johnson was drafted just ahead of Toler but still is learning the nuances of the safety position. Despite getting decent playing time, he did nothing we can remember to cause us to sit up and take notice. Former Jet Miller passed a tryout during the first minicamp.

Specialty Teams:
Post Draft Graham should have been in the Pro Bowl. Rackers suffered a groin injury and this contributed to a couple of whiffs that hurt us late in the season. Sometimes this sort of lack of kicking consistency is purely physical and correctable. Sometimes it can play with a kicker's head. (We'll just have to watch & see). We finally got our potential home run hitter in Stephens-Howling. Breaston's PRproduction tailed off late in the season.
