Safety DataBase
1 Taylor Rapp x Washington   5116 208 x

"... Rapp is a highly intelligent deep defender with excellent anticipation, awareness and instincts. He has a knack for getting around the football, which leads to a number of interceptions and deflections in the middle of the field. - B Brooks (Rates #4)

Comp: Harrison Smith...Good safety size...Quick, fast and atnletic...Big time hitter...Good in man but not asked yo play it very often...Need a verified speed - PFW

One of the nations best open field tacklers...technically sound wrap up tackler...One of the safest prospects in the draft...an inch or two shorter than preferred...Looks the part of an NFL safety - compact, well-muscled...Jeti-like instincts...magnets for hands...remarkable body controll as a tackler...Technically sound...aware in coverage...quicker than fast...Too willing to concede contested balls.. Comp: Patrick Chung - Lindy's

Played high and low at Wash...Leader in the secondary....Instinctive centerfielder who plays faster than his forty and is better off playing high...technically sound tackler...Physical traits are good but far from elite..On the small size...ceiling may be limited due to lack of elite traits....But teams will love Rapp's footbsall IQ and character. An immediate starter in the pros - Athlon

Considered one of the more complete safeties in this class...solid in run support...7 interceptions - USA Today.

Forty: DNP...BP: 17...3C: 6.82....VJ: 35.0...BJ: 9'7...Hand: 9.80...Arm: 30.8.

3 Deionte Thompson xx Alabama   6010 195 x

"... - B Brooks (Rates #2 without commentary)

Desired size and length...Soild in zone...stays low in pedal...Instinctive...keeps plays in front of him..Closes quickly...more of a hitter than wrap-up tackler...Not a burner...equally proficient as strong or free safety but best suited for FS...Extremely aware and instinctive - PFW

Fits the profile of the modern safety (range, reliable tackler, ball skills - fast physical and able to track passes like a WR)...Prototypical build... Publically recognized by Lou Saban for his study and preparation...fantastic athlete for the position...Emotional leader of Tide secondary...Reliable open field tackler...unafraid of playing physical...excellent late explosiveness...just one season as full-time starter...A bit high cut....Comp: Eddie Jackson - Lindy's

Long, lanky, rangy centerfielder... Uses fluid athletiiscm, and pure speed to make plays....will deliver big hits as a tackler...fills hard as a run defender....Somewhat of a mixed bag late in season / gave up big plays...sometimes goes for big hit instead of wrapping up....might be a matter of a year or two's worth of reps to bring him up to speed in the pros...Operating in Saban defense works to his advantage rating-wise - Athlon

Talented deep safety...Forced 4 fumbles in 2018...Was a potential Top 15 pick until scouts took a more thorough look at his mid-season play - USA Today

Forty: DNP...BP: DNP....3C: DNP.....VJ: DNP....BJ: DNP....Hand: 9.8...Arm: 32.1.

2 Nasir Adderly xx Delaware   5116 206 x

"... Adderley is a natural ballhawk with cornerback-like cover skills. He can cover wide receivers and tight ends in the slot or man the deep middle as a pure center fielder in a single-high defense. Although his size is a bit of a concern in run defense, the Delaware star shows enough courage and toughness to be a dependable player in the box. - B Brooks (Rates #3)

Very productive with good instincts...reacts quickly to ru...sideline to sideline range...9 interceptions as a safety during past 2 years...Corner experience a plus (though not asked to play a lot of CB)...FCS level player...Must become more physical and strong to play safety...Projects as rookie backup who could start in Year 2. Test score important - PFW

Checks every box except level of com=petittion...F.CS small school prospects have to earn the attention of NFL scouts - Adderly has done just that...Good bloodlines (Herb is his cousin)...Complete safety with ideal build...Remarkable catch-skills...Plays bigger than size...Slightly undersized...Covers a great deal of ground...natural instincts and and hard-hitting style are strong points...Many consider him to be "this year's elite small school prospect." Comp: Minkah Fitzpatrick - Lindy's

Played first two seasons at CB...Has spatial awareness necessary to play centerfield...Fluid athleticism allows him to have good COD skills...Outstanding reader and reactor...a bit undersized but explosive and twitched up....Outstanding character / high FB IQ...Lack of size and lower level of competition are concerns...Worst case scenario would be as a quallity single-high safety but he has the potential to be so much more...Nearly interchangeable with SS's - Athlon

Rangy and athletic...fits mold as a FS in the modern NfL - USA Today

Forty: 4.45...BP: 16...3C: 6.82....VJ: 35.0...BJ: 9'7...Hand: 9.0...Arm: 31.0

5 Chauncey Gardner-Johnson - xx Florida   5107 210 x

Good size for safety...Has a CB's feet, speed and suddenness...Played a lot of man...VG in run support....Need verifiable measurables...Leaves too much cushion in "off" coverage....Coaching change last season altered his role in the secondary (to nickel corner)...Plays an aggressive game...Solid Day 2 pick - PFW

Playmaker...Improved consistency in 2018...Comfortable playing near the LOS...Compact athletic frame...Makes plays in traffic, often vs. bigger ball carrieres...Good quicks and COD...Trusts his eyes and shows zero hesitation when he sees the ball...Just average straight ahead speed - Lindy's

Versatile and unique...has the twitchiness and short-area quicks to mirror underneath...Has enough size to handle bigger receivers and TE's...Has range to play high if needed...Good (but not great) size and speed...Might be a stretch as a pure single-high safety...Needs to become more consistent both as a tackler and in coverage - Athlon.

Forty: 4.48...BP: 17...3C: 7.03....VJ: 36.0...BJ: 9'9...Hand: 9.2...Arm: 30.8.

6 Johnathan Abram xx Miss State   5113 205 x

"... Abram is a heavy hitter with a knack for getting to the ball. He is an enforcer between the hashes but also exhibits the requisite ball skills and instincts to play in the deep middle. With Abram also flashing blitzing ability and run-stopping skills as a box defender, he is an intriguing puzzle piece to add to a defense. - B Brooks (Rates #1)

Strong, thick build...Adept in man coverage....Deluxe hitter...VG speed...Extremely aggressive in run support...Fun to watch on tape - PFW

Physical tone-setter...shorter than ideal but has an imposing compact frame...Aggressive tackler but runs hot and cold...Too easily deked...- Lindy's

Big physical box safety...at his best tackling downhill....Teams will love his physicality and character....Will overrun plays and be prone to overreaction on misdirection or taking himself out of plays...Lacks the athleticism needed to match up with most pro receivers...Coverage limitations and inconsistency vs. the run are concerns, but there's plenty to like about his physicality and aggressiveness - Athlon

16 QB pressure (3rd in nation)...thunderous tackler - USA Today

Forty: 4.45...DNP...BP: 16...3C: DNP....VJ: DNP...BJ: 9'8...Hand: 9.6...Arm: 31.4

4 Amani Hooker - xx Iowa   5113 210 x

The 4.48 forty should allay concerns about speed - Gollin

Size and speed only concerns...Plays man on inside receivers and equally as well in zone...Very good hands and ball skills...Lacks ideal safety size...plays deep or in the box...Impressive instincts...Should start as a rookie - PFW

Looks the part of a NFL five-year veteran...Shows no hesitation to take on bigger opponents high...exceptional ball-skills....Borderline reckless - Lindy's

(No write-up by Athlon)

Forty: 4.48...BP: 14...3C: 6.81....VJ: 37.0...BJ: 10'3...Hand: 9.2...Arm: 30.2.

7 Jaquan Johnson - xx Miami (Fla.)   5101 191 x

Miami's leading tackler over past 2 years...Good awareness in coverage/plays the ball well...Very aggressive run support safety..Lacks ideal size but plays big...Best as "off" safety and should be a starter early - PFW

Junkyard dog mentality...Combines terrific awareness with legitimate playmaking chops...Terrific focus and body control when ball is in the air...More quick than fast/plays bigger than his size...short but not small...Invited to Senior Bowl to assess ability as a nickel corner (but write up fails to explain whether he could fit the bill)...Good blitzer...Forced 6 fumbles and had 8 interceptions while at Miami - Lindy's

Aggressive physical safety who lined up high and low in college...at his best attacking downhill...Brings the kind of toughness and football character teams look for...Undersized and could struggle in the box...Limited in coverage with only average play-speed...Character strengths aside, he'll have to make it as an undersized box safety - a tough challenge - Athlon

Forty: 4.69...BP: 18...3C: DNP....VJ: 33.0...BJ: 10'1....Hand: 8.8...Arm: 29.6.

8 Blace Brown - xx Troy   6003 194 x

Good athlete with quicks and COD...Lacks necessarily play-speed to keep up downfield...Slow to find the ball...Long, lean & lacks strength...Has some traits but looksmore like a backup - PFW

Track record of overcoming expectations...ACL injury raises red flag...Natural in coverage...Has tight low backpedal and swivel hips...Herschel walker's nephew...Smooth but not sudden...Let's others do the dirty work as a tackler - Lindy's

Was one of college FB's top off-coverage DB's before teaaring an ACL...Has good tight backkpedal...excellent instincts...will need to bring more physical presence to his game...Medical concerns a biggie (a quality prospect if he can return to 100% health) - Athlon

Forty: 4.75...BP: 14...3C: 7.33....VJ: DNP...BJ: 10'6...Hand: 9.8...Arm: 32.0.

9 Marvell Tell III - xx Southern California   6020 198 x

(Not written up by PFW)

USC's poor 2018 season may have contributed to a fall-off in Tell's production...Still might earn Top 100 ranking if he produces at Senior Bowl..,Rare height for position...broad shoulders...long arms...smooth almost graceful runner...Can get himself in trouble when he turns his back on passer...Will absorb (rather than deliver) blows...Can get lazy with tackling-techniques - Lindy's

Combines good size and athleticsm...will shoot thru traffic to get to the ballcarrier...Length makes him effective in man coverage...But he is completely unrefined / will struggle in zone coverage and get caught flatfooted and is slow to diagnose the action in front of him....Consistently late to the ball...Will need to be coached-up. Physical instincts are good but his instincts haven't kept pace - Athlon

Forty: DNP...BP: DNP...3C: 6.63....VJ: 42.0...BJ: 11'4...Hand: 9.8...Arm: 33.1.

10 Sheldrick Redwine -   Miami (Fla.)   6000 196

Size/speed prospect who makes more plays on paper than on tape...Not always a quick-reactor in zme - PFW

Versatile (outside CB, nickel corner and safety) ...Turnover machine - 5 ints, 3 FF's and 2 FR's...may have been overshadowed by fellow safety J Johnson...More of a read and react player...bounces off some runners on contact - Lindy's

Forty: 4.44...BP: DNP...3C: DNP...VJ: 39.0...BJ: 10'10...Hand: 9.4...Arm: 31.8.

11+ Lukas Denis   Boston Coll   5112 190

... - B Brooks (Rates #5 without commentary)

Rangy with good ball-skills...Instincts a strong point...Very good in man coveragevs. slot guys...Lacks size, speed and growth-potential...Some drop off from big 3017 season...Probably will be a backup - PFW

Lacks size and elite speed but has extremely quick feet and plays a nice centerfieeld - Lindy's

Converted CB...a ballhawking FS with excellent ball skills...Good COD quicks and balance...Undersized and not very physical...Some versatility in coverage, but not a good enough tackler at this point to be trusted...More of a drag-down tackler than hitter... production and playmaking regressed last year... - Athlon

Forty: 4.64...BP: 16...3C: 6.89....VJ: 33.5...BJ: 9'8...Hand: 9.5...Arm: 31.2.
