The Setup
The Cards were coming off a gut-wrenching OT loss to the Vikings. Seattle (with Whitehurst in for Hasselbeck got thumped big time by the Giants. This leaves the Seahawsk at 4 & 4 with the Cards one game behind at 3 & 5. Hasselbeck is back. Cardinal quarterbacking is, at best, shaky. If they can get even an average performance out of Derek Anderson, they should be favored at home. But Seattle whacked the Cardinals in their first meeting before a loud Seahawk stadium, and Marshawn Lynch (in his second game since coming over from the Bills) ran like a man possessed - right up the gut, and the Cardinals couldn't stop him. Key challenges for the Cardinals will be to: (a) contain Hasselbeck (who's back from a concussion), (b) stop Lynch and (c) neutralize 6-5 WR Mike Williams (who dominated Cardinal DB's in Game #1).

There are those who believe that this is a "must game" that - should we lose - will mean that Cards will be done for the season. I'm not buying  - each year, there are one or two teams considered "finished" who come back from the dead and wind up in the playoffs. To declare the Cardinal season "over" in a tightly bunched division with 6 games remaining is to set ourselves up for failure. No doubt, if we lose to the Seahawks, we'll be behind the 8-ball and would have our work cut out for us, but one thing a successful team has to do every once in a while is to fight its way through an adverse situation. Let's hope it doesn't come down to this, but if it does, it will still be way too early to pull the plug before the patient actually dies.

It will all come down to "who wants it most" and who has the most poise.

(Note Update - We received a last-minute phone call cancelling our dinner date because one of our dinner-mates "got the runs." Yippee, I can watch the game and post on time! (Unfortunately, it appears as if though Cardinal team also came down with a collective case of the runs).

The Bottom Line:
This time the score was 36 - 18. It wasn't so much that the Cardinals sucked in all aspects of play than it was their inability to cover Mike Williams (who had 11 catches for 145 yards), 10 penalties for 50 yards, continued subpar play by Adrian Wilson (whose nickname these days might more aptly be "A-Flub"), the inability of Derek Anderson to anticipate defensive schemes and coverages to check out of bad plays and hit open receivers early enough for them to elude defenders after the catch plus the growing awareness that Levi Brown is not quick enough of foot to be a decent NFL left tackle.

I had pointed out earlier that we shouldn't consider this a "must game" (that would mean the continuation or end of our season), but I did so within the context of the possibility that we might lose due to some weird bounce of the ball or funky ref call. But based on our overall qualitative level of play juxtaposed against a very average Seattle football team, I just don't see this year's Cardinals going anywhere. (Their level of execution in several arears would have to be raised by quantum amounts for them to have any kind of shot at reaching the playoffs).

Bright Spots

• Anderson continued to look more and more comfortable with his receivers.

• Alan Branch played like a man possessed for the entire game

The Dark Side

• I think Anderson's problem is that he's unable to pick up presnap reads, process them and use this information  to anticipate pass rush pressure or when receivers will be open. Typical result will be that the receiver will get open, but Anderson's throws will arrive "late" (so that the pass defender has time to catch up and either break up the pass or deliver a walloping hit before the receiverhas time to run with the ball). I'm guessing that this is an innate problem that Derek has tried to compensated-for by throwing extra hard (& we know what happens when he does that). This may unlock the mystery of "the guy with a gun who continues to struggle" - not good news but possibly something that can at least be worked on while he's still in AZ.

• Adrian Wilson continues to fail to make big plays. One whiff of an open field tackle deep in the secondary (where three guys had the receiver surrounded) was flat out pathetic. You've heard of "air guitar?" A-Dub was demonstrating the rare art of "air tackling."

• Levi Brown was continually whipped around the edge by speedy edge rushers at precisely the times in the game when he needed to be extra-careful to keep those guys away from Anderson. Either he's failing to maintain his concentration or he simply lacks the feet to play LT in the NFL. Some folks at the scouting level should be asking themselves who was responsible for the scouting reports that projected Levi as a high-middle 1st round draft pick who could play LT.

• For the second time this season, we couldn't stop Seattle's Mike Williams (who had 11 receptions for what seemed to be a bushel basket of converted 3rd downs). When another team is having its way with you, you find a way to stop them - even if it means changing your schemes and looks to put an extra defender on the red-hot RB. QB or in this case, receiver. Bill Davis - who seemed honor-bound to cover Williams one on one with either Toler or DRC and no extra help - had no clue as to how to stop Williams. His job as DC is to make the necessary adjustments, and he failed to do it (yet again).
